What is a Doula?

“If a Doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.” Dr. J. Kennell

A doula is a companion, a guide, a teacher, along your journey from pregnancy to parenthood. As with any other monumental life event, the transition to parenthood (whether it’s your first or fourth) benefits from preparation and support. A Doula provides that support; offering information, answering questions, holding space for emotional processing, and providing physical support and guidance. A doula also acts as facilitator of conversations between partners, families and providers.

What I do …

Birth happens… in many places and in many ways. Birth can take place at home, a birth center, a hospital, an operating room. It can occur unmedicated, medicated, augmented, or surgically. As a Doula, I consult with you and your partner to assess your individual and family goals. Based on those goals, I provide information to guide your family in decision making, in preparation for your birthing time. I offer conversation topics you may want to have with family, friends, or providers prior to your birth. I assist you in outlining specific birth goals so you know what to expect during birth. When your birthing time arrives, I will offer continual support related to your goals. That support looks different for each family, it may be more of an emotional sounding board, physical support, partner support, and/or facilitating communication. Contact me to see how I can support you.

Michelle has truly been an invaluable addition to our pregnancy journeys. We see Michelle not only as a friend, but a partner and advocate who knows what we want, listens for any potential change, and ensures that any decision that is made is in line with our plan. Michelle brings such a calming and reassuring presence to the room while also providing leading edge expertise and confidence throughout the birthing process.

Because of our experiences working with Michelle for both of our sons, we not only would recommend Michelle to anyone, but would recommend a doula be a part of your preparation."
